Opening The Door to Fear

As I was skimming my favorite writing blog sites again, I ran across a blog by agent Donald Maass on Writer Unboxed. His blog on March 2nd was about fear–how to seek it out in all its intensity and use it test your character.

The Scary Door.

Digging deep for emotion is something I really struggle with.  I know why.  There was a long time in my life when exposing raw emotion was a very bad thing.  As an emotional person, I had to learn to control myself, and I learned that lesson very very well.  Probably too well.  Not that I’m unfeeling now.  I don’t think anyone who knows me would say that.  But I also don’t go mining for strong, deep, or negative emotions and really let myself feel them.

This is probably my biggest hurdle to creating the type of book I want to write.  So the article linked below was very timely.

Writer Unboxed » What Are You Afraid Of?.

I have every writing book Donald Maass has written.  I attended one of his seminars, which was one of the most meaningful of any I have attended.  He has great, sound ideas coming from the experience of having been a successful agent.

Read the blog.  You won’t be sorry.

Happy writing.

  1. Wow — what a great article. Thanks for sharing that — it’s a good reminder to dig deeper – something I sometimes find difficult myself, especially if doing so hits a little too close to home…but since my main character has (I think anyway) a few personal demons to overcome, these are great questions to think about as I write.
