Christmas Eve is upon us. When my kids were younger, I used to take them out driving on Christmas Eve, our annual hunt for the best Christmas lights. I would play Christmas music, and we would debate which lights were the best. I don’t know if it was a memorable event for them, but it was for me.
As they got to be teenagers, the desire to hang out with Mom in the car while driving around and looking at Christmas was replaced by hanging out in their rooms playing video games. I don’t blame them. I remember reaching a point in my teenagehood where I hung out in my room a lot. Back then, there wasn’t even anything fun to do there except to read or write.
The boys are grown and doing their own thing these days, and the husband and I have family plans on Christmas Eve these days, so the search for lights had to go by the wayside. I miss it, though. Who knows? Maybe next year I will start the tradition again on a new day–my own little welcoming of the Christmas season.
Until then, for all my family and friends, and especially to Joe, who originally shared this with me, I leave you with this classic holiday song.
Merry Christmas, everyone.
